Chapter 12

Day four and counting.

“I’m sorry for the delay,” Nate placed the vegan dish in front of a guest. “I prepared your meal from scratch. Let’s see if this is to your taste,” he pointed at the contents. “It’s a vegetable biryani accompanied by a house-made cilantro and mint chutney.”

The woman looked up at him. “A biryani? I love anything with chickpeas, rice, and spices.”

“Plus I added a reduced vegetable stock, toasted cashews, and raisins.”

“The aroma is lovely,” He barely stifled a sigh of relief. He never felt truly confident about second-guessing what would agree with a person’s palate.

She placed a spoonful of the mixture in her mouth. “Oh, yum. The spice of India. This dish reminds me of the Malabar Coast.”

“I trained with a chef from the region.”

The woman’s eyes lit. “I stayed fairly close to there. It’s a lovely country. Lots of cultural history.”

He nodded.

“Would you care to join me?” the sixty-something woman asked. “We can swap stories.”

He quickly perused the 24-table dining area. The intimate lighting, soft cream and butternut squash colors, and modern light fixtures set the cozy mood—until he caught Zoey’s expression. She stood on the opposite side of the room. Something was definitely wrong. Her fists hung at her side, and her jaw pulsated. If he’d been standing next to her, she’d have left him scorched.

He glanced behind him and found a wall.

Yep, her arrows were aimed at him.

She swiveled and bulldozed through the gallery door like she was barreling through the 49ers defensive line.

The long day caught up with him, and his body sagged with exhaustion. He’d love nothing more than to sit for a few minutes and discuss his time in India, but he needed to tend to the other guests, and find out why Zoey was spitting mad.

“I’m afraid I must get back to the kitchen, but please be sure to share your thoughts with the wait staff. I’d be interested to know if I should recommend this dish as a standard for the menu.”

“It’s Nate, right?”

He paused, sensing caution was in order. “Yes, that’s right.”

The elegant woman, with her sophisticated and clearly expensive clothing, jewelry, and salon-styled hair, took a moment to wipe her mouth and draped the linen napkin back across her lap. “Please don’t mind Zoey’s outrage. She wasn’t aiming it at you.”

The woman had slumped against the chair back, her lively expression gone.

“Do you know Miss Foster?”

The elegant woman set her spoon aside and studied him with an unfiltered curiosity. “I’m Victoria Foster, Zoey’s mother.”

Well. That certainly settled his confusion about what was going on with Zoe.

“I see.” He clasped his hands behind his back. “It’s nice to meet you, ma’am.”

“Don’t let my daughter hear you say that, or she’ll fillet you for dinner.”

He chuckled, mostly because his brain couldn’t come up with a sensible reaction. “Zoey will come around. She’s never been one to hold a grudge.”

A hint of light returned to the matriarch’s eyes. “I hope so, and thank you for your kindness.”

“My pleasure, ma’am. Now, I do need to get back.
